Benefits of recycling vs. primary production

Energy savings and emission reduction

The process of recycling aluminium is remarkably efficient, saving up to 95% of the energy compared to primary production. This substantial energy saving directly translates into a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

However, the benefits of recycling aluminium go beyond energy and emissions. Notably, the process requires considerably less water compared to primary production, thus contributing to water conservation. Moreover, by reducing the need for bauxite mining, aluminium recycling offers biodiversity advantages, preserving natural habitats and ecosystems.

Navigating the value chain

Combining values and conventions

The allocation of these benefits in a value chain that includes primary metal and multiple recycling is determined by value decisions and conventions along the value chain. Given that there is no universally accepted 'best option' that outperforms all others scientifically, our approach to recycling is driven by a combination of industry standards, environmental conventions, and our unique perspective on sustainability.

Typically, customers of rolled aluminium products place a high value on products with substantial recycled content. This preference is largely driven by the sustainability benefits associated with higher recycled content, which resonates with the environmental values of their own customer base.

Transparency is key

Working with third-party organizations

For Speira, sustainable action goes well beyond CO2 reduction. A sustainable approach also includes a high degree of transparency in processes and business procedures.

To audit and certify our sustainable commitment and actions, as well as our production facilities, we work together with external organizations:

  • Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Certifications
  • ASI Performance Standard: Grevenbroich, Hamburg, Rheinwerk, Karmøy, and Holmestrand
  • ASI Chain of Custody Standard: Grevenbroich, Hamburg, and Rheinwerk
  • ISO certifications: ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 50001
  • International Automotive Task Force (IATF)
